The Ownership Shift
Definition
The Ownership Shift is Indiemaker's term for what happens as AI collapses the cost of building. The advantage moves from doing the work to owning the asset the work produces. When anyone can ship a product in a weekend, scarcity sits in distribution, customer relationships, operating history and clean title.
The Ownership Shift is Indiemaker's term for what happens as AI collapses the cost of building: the advantage moves from doing the work to owning the asset the work produces. Execution used to be the moat. It is now the cheapest input in the chain.
At a $50,000 to $150,000 deal, this shows up as a widening gap between two things that look similar. A working product with no customers is close to worthless, because a buyer can commission the same thing in a fortnight. A working product with 400 subscriptions, eighteen months of billing history and documented operations is a six figure asset, and the difference between them has almost nothing to do with the code.
The Ownership Stack
This is what an individual accumulates as the shift plays out: products, audiences, domains, data, operating knowledge and the proceeds of previous transfers. Each item makes the next one cheaper to acquire or faster to build. Ownership Capital is the same idea measured across a working life, meaning what a person owns outright rather than what they are currently being paid to produce.
Worked example
Two founders, both shipping with AI assistance. The first launches six products in a year and none passes $400 MRR, so at the end of it there is nothing a buyer would price. The second runs one product to $3,300 MRR over eighteen months, documents the operation, moves the accounts into a company name and exits at 3× trailing annual profit for roughly $118,000.
The second founder now starts again holding capital, a completed transfer they understand, and a set of habits that make the next business easier to hand over. That is the stack forming.
The practical consequence is that building is no longer the part worth optimising for. Distribution, retention, records and clean ownership are. If you want the work to be worth something to somebody else, build the thing that can change hands.
